My apologies if this has been discussed before, but I'm trying to determine if there is any meaning to my half-brother and I having "high sharing" on the Y chromosome at 5MB [segment between app 11,5 > 18,2]. We have the same mother but different fathers.
I take it this means our fathers have a common male ancestor; question is how far back? We don't share anything on the Y at 10MB.
Can anyone direct me to a table or chart that outlines significance of level of sharing at various segment sizes?
Thx in advance. |

You inherit the entire Y chromosome from your father and it's rate of change is very slow in comparison to the other chromosomes. Because of this, the fragment size sharing is not so informative - that's why we don't show Y in the comparison pages, only in the genome browser.
Both you and your brother will have identical Y chrs to all other members of your respective male line groups. You should be able to see at what point you have the common male ancestor by simply looking at the male line trees. You can't really gain any more information than this by using the genome browser. |

| Thanks Keith. So our common ancestor is pretty far back then as I am R1b1b2g and he is R1b1b2h. |
