Male line information: Y-group S
<0.5% of deCODEme users are a member of this group.
All members of Y-group S can trace their Y-chromosomes back to one man who is thought to have lived about 40 thousand years ago, probably in East Africa or Western Asia. This man may have belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers, who were among the first modern humans to migrate from Africa to Eurasia and may initially have made their home in Iran or southern Central Asia.
Today, members of Y-group S are primarily found in Oceania and Indonesia. The highest concentration of Y-group S members is found among aboriginal Australians and the tribes of Papua New Guinea, where up to 40 percent of males belong to this Y-group. About 4 to 11 percent of Polynesian males belong to Y-group S, in places such as Tahiti, the Solomon Islands and Fiji.
Note that Y-group S was previously called K5 and was previously classified under Y-group K* in deCODEme. The name was changed to accord with the latest developments in the scientific literature.
