Y-group: R1a
subgroup: 3 (R1a1)

Male line information: Y-group R*

0.5% of deCODEme users are a member of this group.

All members of Y-group R* can trace their Y-chromosomes back to one man who is thought to have lived about 27 thousand years ago, probably in Western Asia. This man may have belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers, who were among the first modern humans to migrate from Africa to Eurasia and may initially have made their home in Iran or southern Central Asia. As it happens, two other Y-groups found in populations of European and Asian ancestry are also descended from this man (namely, Y-groups R1a and R1b). However, Y-group R* represents the collection of all the male lines of descent from this man that do not lead to these other Y-groups.

Today, members of Y-group R* are primarily found in Europe and Asia, but at a very low frequency.
