Male line information: Y-group G
2.8% of deCODEme users are a member of this group.
All members of Y-group G can trace their Y-chromosomes back to one man, who is thought to have lived about 30 thousand years ago, possibly in East Africa or the Near East. This man belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers that later spread through the Near East, Asia and Europe. In almost all populations where members of Y-group G are found they are rare. Nonetheless, Y-group G is quite widely distributed throughout the world. This suggests that the relative frequency of Y-Group G members may have been greater in the past.
Today, members of Y-group G are rare in Northwest Europe (less than 1 percent), but more common in Southern Europe, where members are for example found at frequencies of 14 percent on the island of Sardinia, 10 percent in north-central Italy, 8 percent in Northern Spain and almost 7 percent in Turkey. Members are found in Africa and as far off as in the Maori of New Zealand.
