Y-group: R1a
subgroup: 3 (R1a1)

Male line information: Y-group F*

0.6% of deCODEme users are a member of this group.

All members of Y-group F* can trace their Y-chromosomes back to one man who is thought to have lived about 50 thousand years ago, probably in East Africa or Western Asia. This man may have belonged to a group of hunter-gatherers, who were among the first modern humans to migrate from Africa to Eurasia and may initially have made their home in Iran or southern Central Asia. As it happens, many of the other Y-groups found in populations of European and Asian ancestry are also descended from this man (namely, Y-groups G, H, I1, I2, J, L, M, N, O, P, Q, R1a and R1b). However, Y-group F* represents the collection of all the male lines of descent from this man that do not lead to these other Y-groups.

Today, members of Y-group F* are found in Asia, Europe and Africa, but are rare.
